OFFICIAL ADVICE FROM THE U.S. MILITARY

U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID) receives hundreds of reports a month from individuals who have fallen victim to a scam perpetrated by a person impersonating a U.S. Soldier online.
Victims of these “romance scams” report they became involved in an online relationship with someone they believed to be a U.S. Soldier who then began asking for money for various false service-related needs. Victims of these scams can lose tens of thousands of dollars and face a slim likelihood of recovering any of it.
Victims may encounter these romance scammers on a legitimate dating website or social media platform, but they are not U.S. Soldiers. To perpetrate this scam, the scammers take on the online persona of a current or former U.S. Soldier, and then, using photographs of a Soldier from the internet, build a false identity to begin prowling the web for victims.
Never send money to someone claiming to be a Soldier!
The most common scheme involves criminals, often from other countries -- most notably from West African countries -- pretending to be U.S. Soldiers serving in a combat zone or other overseas location. These crooks often present documents and other "proof" of their financial need when asking their victims to wire money to them.
CID's Computer Crime Investigative Unit also cautions Soldiers themselves to be on the guard for "sextortion scams." In these scams, criminals engage in online sexual activity with unsuspecting Service members and then demand money or favors in exchange for not publicizing potentially embarrassing images, video or information.
Such scams, when they involve dating sites, pose a unique challenge in the fight against impostors and identity thieves, because on such sites a dating profile is often required to conduct a search for fake accounts. That makes it difficult for organizations to monitor those sites for impersonators using a Soldier’s or key leaders’ information in a scam.
In addition, it is not possible to remove dating site profiles without legitimate proof of identity theft or a scam. If you suspect fraud on a dating site, take a screenshot of any advances for money or impersonations and report the account on the platform immediately.

Online Romance Scam Information

scam exampleArmy CID is warning anyone who is involved in online dating to proceed with caution when corresponding with persons claiming to be U.S. Soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan or elsewhere.
Army CID receives hundreds of allegations a month from victims who state they got involved in an online relationship with someone, on a legitimate dating website or other social media website, who claims to be a U.S. Soldier. The "Soldier" then begins asking for money for various false, service-related needs such as transportation costs, communication fees, marriage, processing and medical fees. Victims of these online scams have lost tens of thousands of dollars, with a very low possibility of recovery.
The U.S. has established numerous task force organizations to deal with this growing epidemic; unfortunately, many times the people committing these scams are from African countries using untraceable email addresses, routing accounts through numerous locations around the world and utilizing pay per hour Internet cyber cafes, which often times maintain no accountability of use.
You can also learn more about identity theft, romance scams, sextortion and online impostors at the U.S. Army's Social Media Resources site.
If you feel you have been scammed by a person claiming to be a U.S. Army Soldier, contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

What to look for:

  •  DO NOT SEND MONEY! Be extremely suspicious if you are asked for money for transportation costs, communication fees or marriage processing and medical fees. Use of Western Union.
  •  If you do start an internet-based relationship with someone, check them out, research what they are telling you with someone who would know, such as a current or former service member.
  •  Be very suspicious if you never get to actually speak with the person on the phone or are told you cannot write or receive letters in the mail. Servicemen and women serving overseas will often have an APO or FPO mailing address. Internet or not, service members always appreciate a letter in the mail.
  •  Many of the negative claims made about the military and the supposed lack of support and services provided to troops overseas are far from reality - check the facts.
  •  Be very suspicious if you are asked to send money or ship property to a third party or company. Often times the company exists, but has no idea or is not a part of the scam.
  •  Be very suspicious if the person you are corresponding with wants you to mail anything to an African country.
  •  Be aware of common spelling, grammatical or language errors in the emails.
  •  Be very suspicious of someone you have never met and who pledges their love at warp speed.

I have been speaking with someone that calls himself Freddie Pancho. He says his parents died when he was 22 has no children and his wife died of cancer 4 years ago... says he is stationed in Nigeria. I asked for his APO which he replied " I do not want you to send me anything, I don't think they have an APO here.. they use box mail. They are stupid about security". When I asked him to send me an e-mail from his military email address he replied " I don't use that e-mail for anyone and my lieutenant has access to it" I feel stupid for believing the person BUT in hindsight.. I'm glad it never went any further and I put a stop to it. When I started asking for things like APO and military email address, the messages almost stopped all together. BE SAFE out there ladies.

I posted here yesterday but I forgot to put the Scammer's name. He uses Dr. Andy Baldwin's pictures and profile in IG as JefBaldwin. Found two names under Jeff Baldwin in IG. I was a fool to believe him and sent him $$. I didn't listen to my instincts and kept on. Till I couldn't shake the odd feeling I had, so I did my research and found out that the guy I've been talking to in IG is not Dr. Andy Baldwin. I searched You tube and found videos of the real Dr. Baldwin and he's american. The guy that's been talking to me has a very heavy accent. He does sound African. He says, he's Sbernian. Anyways, I was scammed bad and thank goodness I finally researched and I reported to Federal Bureau of Investigation. He also used Dr. Chucks Kingsley as his African Diplmat. And all the pictures he sent to me, were all found in the internet under the real Dr. Andy Baldwin.

Been talking to a guy name Alex Porter, Belfast Washington, in the military on a mission for NATO, wife died in car accident and child lives in Russia with his brother

My scammer used the profile picture of a man named Greg Phillips and used a man in army uniform named Jason B Jordan. He called himself Alfred Jayson Mettos and was deployed in Damascus, Syria as a commandant.
He asked for money to pay for his daughter's school fees as the nanny had infiltrated all the cash he had left.I realised from the beginning when he told me is wife was assassinated.

Ohya, I forgot to tell, He is using the name Matthew Pitts and with Kakaotalk ID: markp

The one is TANDEM is Jackson, he contacted me later from wechat, his wechat iD is e91101e
This JAckson man is asian look, perhaps because i am asian too. He said he is a military personnel, working as a mechanical engineer and he is in charged of logistic data. I dont trust him that why i have him blocked too.
I am afraid he is just another scam.

Okay so I wished up. I do feel naive about this. So yes I was stupid and did the iTunes card not really thinking anything about it. Then it continued so I got an uneasy feeling. Started to do research. So this guy posed as Christopher O'Neil a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He says he is stationed in Germany. He says he has a daughter Linda who lives with his Ex. He also claims to be a dual citizen. He will settle in Canada. These guys are good. I'm not worryed about the loss of iTunes cards. He did start to ask for money to get his exit card from the army. I'm not embarrassed anymore. I never gave him my info other than my name. He was on the Plenty of Fish app posses as lonelychris and has a picture of a man holding a little red haired girl. The same pictures you have above of John O'Neil. I communicated with him through the Kik app. Hi name ChrisONeil. He is blocked. I just hate that they have some of my pictures. Such an idiot. I've learned.

I was contacted today by someone alleging to be Aron Avalon Smith. He sent pictures to me via KIK the messaging app.

I have a scammer who has contacted me going by the name of WILLIAM DONALDSON using the photos of Uwe Herbutus Knoedsleder. Usual story, claiming to be U.S. military based in Syria. Says his son has been injured in an accident and needs £700 for medical fees or he will die. Even sent me fake photos of the alleged 'accident'. 'He' is insistent that I send money via Western Union to Trina Kae Mattingly, Alaska. Obviously I know it's all a scam but I wanted to see how much information I could extract. Apparently Trina Kae Mattingly is the name of the doctor (Of course), but when I asked for the doc's number so I could call and enquire about his 'critically ill son' he said he is only in contact by email (AS IF!) and gave me the following address: Georgewilf23@gmail.com
He claims that his U.S. home address is 'Number 22 off Jackson Estate, Santa Clarita, California' and his military address is 'U.S.Army base, Aleppo Damascus, Num 41 Randy Road' I've quoted the addresses as 'he/they' wrote them.
I know it's all BS. I just wanted to share the information I have.

Gabriele Freer is at it again. He's on Tinder and "wants to take it to the next level" wants a iTunes card sent to him. smh!

I started talking with this guy here Sgt gary R Martin from the army rank E9 when he started asking for money I asked him for real pics of himself with my name and date on it,and he did, but kept asking for more money. I was ashame to ask for help to a friend of my sister from the army. He explained how much such a BS was this he said soldiers don't need permission for leave or pay for anything. If anything please ask for help to your local recruiter no matter what. I wish all the best!!

Thanks for reply.. Think I just lost the first attempt! :( Anyway, update on scammer @AlvinJohnsgard. He changed his photos after I outed him here. 2 other women knew as well & had blocked him. So I posted their names and pics as fake with twitter USdefence handle & publicly. After that I was blocked. Am glad. The give-away's were poor English, flowery language and being annoying. 3. scamchatfightback@gmail.com.. please send all you have there.

Unless he knows your address and other details he may not be able to take out a loan.. but.. this is why they get this information from you. It is all for sale and especially if it's a passport. Even ID card... it's useful for them.

I'll post him here for you and on our other social media pages. Please though... don't ever send anything to someone you have never met in real life. There isn't much you can do. I don't know what he has of yours. If it can be used I would always consider a Police report.

No real soldier needs money for ANYTHING.. and iTunes cards are scammer currency. They 'load' them.. top them up from stolen credit cards and bank accounts. So, even an inempt scammer can sell them to a better fraudster for a lot of money.

He introduced a so called "son" of his and asked, to send some money to him, as a christmas gift, becouse he was "on patrouille". Wich she unfortunately did. Now she is afraid of blackmailing. What shoud the poor woman do? She is talking about suicide. I am worried about her.

It's the thing they hate the most and hardest to do. However they like being in control and THEY ARE NOT. She is.
Be STRONG.. AND DON'T RESPOND. AT ALL... block everywhere. Blackmail is common and they will go away. It's just she has found a bad one, which to be honest the majority are. I'm in the medical field so I know that to be untrue.I then proceeded to say that you Tricare insurance should cover it and that's when he started getting angry. 32.

Basically it's so weird for all the story. after talking for three months, and he started to talk about money, then I blocked him, TODAY.IT's just too bad that i sent him some pictures of mine. I hope that my pictures will not be used.
Luckily i didn't give him my phonenumber or address or email because i was quite unsure of this person.

I have also met one in TANDEM, an app for studying language. The story is more or less the same, all died, no family, in the army and so on. After reading his text last week, i blocked him.

51. I was chatting with a guy called Paul James. He claimed himself to be a US military serving in Yemen. He firstly asked me to send him money so he could transport a box of money out of Yemem. He claimed that as he was deployed to Yemem on service, it would not be possible for him to go to the US to pay for it. My instinct told me it could be a scam. However, he gave me a website of the delivery company and it looked official. But when I searched, there was no customer service, no tel number and no email address. But I sent the delivery company about US$4,500 in any event. The delivery company said they used agent to delivery so I needed to send money to the personal account of their agent. The box never came to me as the delivery company asked me to pay more for a non-inspection certificate and I did not pay. Then, about 2 weeks later, the guy told me his son was on excursion in Italy and needed my help to pay EUR1,900 for a practical. The person who handled his finance was on vacation. The son even wrote to me. I initially refused to pay and stopped communicating with the guy. But the message from the son touched my heart and I sent the money again. The money was sent to a personal account in Italy, unsuccessful, then Norway. The guy gave me explanation it was the account of the professor. Then, about a week later, his son had a car accident on the border of Turkey and was badly injured. They guy even sent me a photo of his badly injured son. He asked me for EUR17,000 as his son was dying and needed a surgery immediately. I did not send him money no matter what he said. I asked for the school's official website and he said don't bother the school as if they could help, they would have done something. He also said he could not get emergency leave and his hands were tied. The person who handled his finance was not contactable. Everyone ran away and he could not get help. He repeatedly said his son was dying and he would not forgive those who refused to help. I did not send him any money this time.

    1. I'm shocked you send money.. really shocked as you looked into the website and didn't research scams using packages.. and is it likely anyone wanted to send a box of money anywhere. Then then the money didn't turn up.. you kept going and he asked for more and you SENT !! WHY ON EARTH DID YOU DO THAT..
Thank heavens you sent no more but you are out a lot of money and some African criminals are going to have a great weekend.

You see now why it's so easy to be a scammer and why it will never end. Why anyone would send money to anyone they have never met is a mystery??? Would you do it if it was someone you barely knew at home?? I don't think so.

I hope you have blocked them all now.. all profiles are teams. Please don't send any more. This is so bad for all women... scamming is much too easy... 'love you babe' and three terrible words as they send women running to send money. Read back what you have said to me and think if any of it could be true. There is a US Embassy for REAL emergencies.. there are always things to do.. nobody needs money from a woman they don't know.

US Military would have ALL expenses regarding medical for children covered. which is easy to find out. NO.. their money is NOT frozen whilst deployed .. because that is a story just too far fetched to believe.

I'm sorry they found you but very sorry criminals have gained again... IT HAS TO STOP

They can ALL give you an email address as the Army tells you.

More will try and know that nobody who tells you Military will ever be real !! So take care and block ! Thanks for the information.

    1. If you report to Police yes. Money laundering is complicated and it depends how many are involved but only the fraud departments and police can investigate.
Get on to them as quickly as possible. Once the money has gone .. it's gone.
However accounts can be frozen and people have been prosecuted so do it.. it's always worth it.
